Weekly Covid-19 (Video) Update

US Numbers as of May 2, 2022 + My Top 5 Key Covid Moments

I finally got around to a video update this week. In it, I briefly discuss the overall trends in our spring Covid rise, and then I touch on the 5 Covid moments that defined various stages of the pandemic. No doubt there are more than 5, and others might choose different moments/periods for their top-5 lists. But these moments, for me, largely capture the flow of the pandemic over the last 2+ years. I’ve listed them in chronological order, not in order of importance.

Cases (7-day Average, CDC Data)

  • Current: 56,166 (4/29/2022)

  • Last Week: 44,234 (+27.0%)

  • Notes and Trends

    • Down 93.0% from winter wave peak, but up 126.1% from recent trough

    • Up 9.2% from the same day last year

Positive Testing Percentage (7-day Average, CDC Data)

  • Current: 6.83% (4/28/2022)

  • Last Week: 5.43% (+25.8%)

  • Notes and Trends

    • Down 76.9% from winter wave peak, but up 223.7% from recent trough

    • Up 55.9% from the same day last year

    • Note that last week was initially 6.16% per CDC, but has now revised down to 5.43% (recent % positive data can show up high until testing gets reported)

Hospitalization Census (HHS Data)

  • Current: 17,104 (5/2/2022)

  • Last Week: 15,642 (+9.3%)

  • Notes and Trends

    • Down 89.4% from the winter wave peak, but up 18.4% from recent trough

    • Down 56.2% from the same day last year

ICU Census (HHS Data)

  • Current: 1,552 (5/2/2022)

  • Last Week: 1,410 (+10.1%)

    • Down 94.1% from the winter wave peak, but up 10.1% from recent trough

    • Down 85.1% from the same day last year
